Natural Dog Treats

FEEDING YOUR DOG NATURAL DOG TREATS

Many dogs are sensitive to certain human foods and ingredients and so we decided from the beginning the Happy Hounds Bakery would avoid common dog allergens such as gluten, wheat, lactose, garlic, onions, leek, macadamia nuts, grapes, currants, sultanas, raisins, chocolate and Xylitol (artificial sweetener). Many of these ingredients can cause immediate and serious reactions if ingested and will require swift veterinary care.

We also know how hard it is to resist giving your dog a snack when those two large and loving eyes look towards you asking for more. So, it is also very important to keep our products as low in calories as possible whilst still producing tasty and appealing treats.

Why treat your dog?

Treats are an integral part of your dog’s daily routine – anyone who owns a dog understands the value of treats and giving your dog a well-deserved treat is a heartfelt gesture that they will remember.

They’re also great for

  • Training and obedience
  • Supplementing their food and boosting health
  • Dental support
  • Energy-boosting on walks
  • Keeping them busy and calm
  • Reinforcing pleasant memories

How many treats should you give your dog?

The number of snacks or treats you can give your dog varies tremendously depending on its size, breed, and level of activity. However, regardless of the type of reward you give your dog, treats should not account for more than roughly 10% of their daily calorie consumption. Feeding healthy treats to your dog helps to you maintain a balanced overall diet.

Balance is Key

Treats, like your dog’s regular meal, should be balanced. Dog treats should contain a variety of nutrients and vitamins that your pet requires to eat a healthy, balanced diet. It should also be tailored to their individual needs at each stage of their lives.

Giving them healthy treats gives them the best chance at maintaining a healthy life and protection from weight gain and boosted brain function. Coconut oil and OMEGA oils, for example, are especially important when it comes to brain function. Certain ingredients like sweet potatoes and blueberries also boost overall health as well.

As a general rule, the more unusual the words on the label are, the worse the food will be for your dog. Avoid preservatives and high-fat or sodium treats by looking for identifiable ingredients on the packaging.
